Registered Nurses Union Celebrates Health Heroes during Nursing Week 2020

St. John’s – The Registered Nurses Union (RNU) is proud to celebrate registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs) and all nursing health heroes during Nursing Week 2020, which runs from May 11-17.

“This week is such an important time to recognize the crucial and unique role that RNs and NPs play in our health sector and communities,” said Debbie Forward, President of RNU. “This is especially true as our province navigates the dangers and impacts of COVID-19.”

RNU members are on the frontlines of the pandemic and their courage, knowledge and expertise has been on full display. They are testing for COVID-19, caring for patients and saving lives, while facing risks to their own health and that of their families.

“There’s no better time to celebrate our nursing health heroes who keep us safe and healthy, not just during COVID-19, but every day,” said Forward. “This week, I encourage you to take time to thank a nurse for all they do, and especially for their contributions right now.”

Today, RNU launched “Who’s Your Health Hero?” This campaign asks the people of Newfoundland and Labrador to join them in celebrating nursing week by nominating a health hero.  To take part, simply share a photo on social media with the hashtag #MyHealthHero and briefly explain the reason for your nomination.

From a record-breaking snowfall to a global pandemic, it’s been a challenging and unique year for nursing. As we celebrate the contributions of nurses in 2020, it’s also a time to call on government and employers to ensure nurses and all health care workers are protected.

“RNs, NPs and health care workers are the foundation of our public health care system and our best shot at beating this pandemic. We must keep them safe by following the precautionary principle and guaranteeing access to the appropriate personal protective equipment.”
