This letter was sent by Vice President Yvette Coffey on behalf of RNU to Premier Furey and Minister Haggie on October 15, 2020.

Dear Premier Furey and Minister Haggie,

I am writing in regard to the task force on health care.

As the largest group of front line providers, registered nurses and nurse practitioners have a unique perspective of the health care system and the ways to make it more efficient. We know firsthand that the challenges to deliver quality patient care continue to grow.

Each day our members face a work environment where inadequate staffing is the norm. Overtime for registered nurses cost the system millions of dollars each year. The impact on patient care and inefficiencies that result from inadequate staffing also place a significant financial burden on our health care system.

It is vital to consider the point of view of those on the front line when identifying opportunities that will reduce health system costs, but will not create dangerous gaps in the system. The people of the province will count on us to ensure quality, safe patient care is there for them when they need it.

As the union representing RNs and NPs, the Registered Nurses’ Union Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking to be a member of the health care task force. We can offer the task force vital insights and ideas to strengthen health care for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

We look forward to partnering with your government and stakeholders. I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Regards,

Yvette Coffey

Vice President
