RNU is turning 50! Celebratory Details

Since December 5, 1974, when we officially became a registered Union in Newfoundland and Labrador, we have been protecting our profession and fighting to improve the livelihoods of our members.

Commemoration planning is underway for our Golden Anniversary, and we want you to help us celebrate our history and accomplishments. There are many ways to get involved!

  • Regional Spotlights
  • Member Videos
  • Share Your Story
  • Shadow Box Initiative

Each month, RNU will highlight a Region and its Branches. To help make sure we are able to highlight our members in every part of the province, we need your help!

Submit your stories, videos, and photos to us. Our Communications team will take your content and share it on RNU’s social channels to highlight your Branch and Region. Let us showcase why you’re #RNProud or #NPProud and share your favourite RNU memories. We’ll be rotating Regions throughout 2024. Here’s our timeline for Regional Spotlights:

To help with Regional Spotlight content creation, we’ve created a guide with ideas, prompts, and tips to help Branch Presidents connect with their members to help us with our Regional Spotlights.

Please feel free to download and share our RNU50 – Content Prompt Guide.

When recording, please remember to include your name, nursing designation (RN/NP), your branch and Worksite and/or Community. Please refrain from including any information that could breach patient privacy – this includes your surroundings.

We’ve created electronic forms on our website for both RNU members and the general public to fill out and share their favourite RNU memories with us. There’s also an option to upload a photo and share a brief description of what the photo represents. Please share the following links with your members and any friends and family you know that might have a story to share.

Please note: If you share something from your personal social media account that you’d like us to share, please feel free to tag RNU on Facebook or Instagram and use the hashtag #RNU50 so we can re-share it on your behalf.

To recognize the past 50 years, RNU is putting together a shadow box that will be showcased in the main lobby of the Provincial Union Office. We are looking for donations of memorabilia from over the last 50 years. Do you have any old pins? A retro license plate from 1999 strike, when Brian Tobin was Premier? A copy of our first collective agreement? Any other items? If you have any items that you’re willing to donate, please connect with us at info@rnunl.ca.

Back in December, RNU launched a 50th Anniversary Logo Design Contest for our members to create our #RNU50 commemorative logo.

We’d like to congratulate Heather Tracey, the winner of our logo contest! Heather is a nurse practitioner who describes herself as a “Nomadic Northern Nurse”. She resides on the east coast of Newfoundland but does travel locums to Labrador, Bonavista, and other areas in the province in need.

Heather told us that she was feeling inspired to create this logo during an NP Webex meeting with RNU leadership and NPs. The theme Stronger Together stuck out to her.

“I was sitting in the meeting and thinking, ‘We are stronger together’. Whether it’s registered nurses or nurse practitioners, we are stronger together. Senior RNs and junior RNs working together are stronger together. Whatever your specialty, we are stronger together. I looked back at the union and the last 50 years. I thought our old logo should be incorporated into our 50th anniversary logo to commemorate our seasoned RNs and NPs who have been around since the beginning. I thought merging both logos was the best way to show that we are stronger together.”

RNU is in the process of finalizing the design so that it can be reproduced on special commemorative items. Keep an eye out for these special items!
